Baby Turtles

Last night Harold Kuipers shared a couple of videos on Souris Manitoba Talks. They were of some newly hatched baby snapping turtles that he was helping get to the river. To see the full video click the link below. This was his comment on the post

"This mom turtle has made the journey up out of the river onto our property for years, we have lived here 4 years, and she has nested in and around the same spot. We have been lucky enough to see her in the morning the last 4 years. This year I built an enclosure to ensure the babies went down the slope onto our lawn and not onto the street/highway. Anyhow, final count, today is 32 turtles. We have another nest on the south side of our house, that mom laid her eggs about a week after the first one"

Karen Kempe who lives with Harold also had this to say as well.

"Every year we’ve seen the snapping turtle come lay her eggs at the front of the house. This year she laid them at the top of our property beside the sidewalk so I called the local conservation officer. I thought we might be able to dig up the eggs and move them to a safer location. She said moving the eggs could potentially destroy them and then she sent me a link to what conservationists in Ontario do when they are aware of turtles nesting by roadways. So based on a photo, Harold constructed a frame that would force the baby turtles down onto our property instead of potentially crossing the highway based on the location of the nest"

Welcome the new Nurse Practitioner

The original swinging bridge was built in 1904 by Squire Sowden in order to get across the river to his property. The bridge was damaged in the floods in 1976 and 2011 and the current bridge was rebuilt in 2013. It's 604 feet long. The longest swinging pedestrian bridge in Canada.

Duane Davison Runs for Mayor

Duane Davison is running for Mayor this year, here is the description of his event page on facebook and the link to join it below.

Duane Davison was born to Donna & Keith Davison and was raised on a farm North of Souris. After attending SCI, he relocated and spent most of his years on the East Coast and in Alberta. While in Alberta he worked in the Oil & Gas Industry, and also volunteered as President for both the Hanna Curling Club and Golf Course. In 2019 Duane, along with his wife Lorie (nee Strath); who also hails from Souris, moved back to Souris, a place he has always considered home. Duane and Lorie live on an acreage just outside of town limits, with their four dogs. Duane is an active member with the Souris & Glenwood Chamber of Commerce since 2019, and has owned his own business for 20 years.

Duane believes he can lead Souris forward as your Mayor. On October 26th, Vote Davison. Forward. Together.

Darryl Jackson Runs for Mayor

To the Voters of the Municipality of Souris-Glenwood:

Souris has been my home for 42 years. My wife Cherilyn and I raised our son here. I know our community and I have seen and been a part of the changes we have experienced. I respect the beauty that surrounds us and I welcome growth, knowing it can enhance our lives while being mindful of who we are as a community.

I would be honored to continue to commit my time and energy on improving how the municipality contributes to a high quality of life for all its residents, today and for tomorrow. My ability to provide good governance is supported by experience on the council and in the community. It would be my privilege to continue serving as your Mayor.

On October 26th, I humbly ask for your vote to continue the work ahead of us - much has been accomplished, but there is still much to do.

- Darryl Jackson
