Souris History

This week a couple of old pictures of Souris have been shared. Check them out below.

Vintage Winnipeg shared this picture of the old Souris Community School in Souris Talks Facebook Group, on October 16th.

The closest building was the elementary school and the building in the back was the high school, the Coop Gas Station is now occupying the space where they used to be!

The picture below was shared on Souris Talks Facebook Group on October 22nd, by a lady in B.C who trades antiques, here is the description that went with the picture. " Hi,

We do quite a bit of trading in antiques that we use for props and set pieces in B.C. and occasionally end up with items that pique our curiosity.

We came across this medium-large portrait from the late 1800s marked F. E. Kerr and Souris on the back.

Out here in the East Kootenays, many came to be involved with gold mining during that period and we figure that Mrs. Kerr was likely one of them.

If this lovely woman is related to anyone or would be of interest to local history organizations, please contact us and we'll send her back home for the shipping costs.

Thanks,

Laura"

Community Gardens

This was posted by Echo Findlay October 20th on Souris Talks Facebook Group.

"I’ve been asked to help get a group together to look at the possibility of community gardens here in Souris.

***Please note that I am not collecting names of people that would like to actually have a plot in a community garden - this is just the planning and organizing phase***

I can start a list of people interested in the following:

1. Organizing a group to plan how and where this could be done. 2. Donating space (any unused private land that could work?) 3. Donating equipment or supplies. Everything like a water holding tank and hose, wood for building raised beds, garden shed, tools for shared use, etc. 4. Volunteers for the building and maintenance of the area.

Anything else? Community gardens aren’t a moneymaker, they don’t lower the prices of produce in the store or even start to compete with sales. They do build community though. Neighbors helping neighbors to learn about gardening and kids love it!

Please comment below if you are willing to help and I will pass your name along. We are especially looking for someone that wants to become a lead organizer for this group!"

Community Heros

Every community in Canada has heroes who don’t make headlines.

They just work and give their best for others.

Kubota and the CHL want to give these heroes their moment.

Nominate your community hero and they could win $20000 for charity.
